Australian Cattle Dog Pet Rating System: 1= Lowest 5 = Highest
Overall Rating:
Our Rating: Australian Cattle Dogs are a herding breed with high intelligence and high activity. Because of this combination, they do well in a situation where they have a "job". They must have frequent exercise and entertainment to be happy. This breed has a good temperament but can be nippy and is known to bond more closely with one person. This means you will have a loyal follower but also means they are not great with children. Their nipping behavior extends to children who they try to herd out of instinct. They are medium in size reaching about 60 pounds. However, they are not for smaller homes and yards. They need lots of area to roam or lots of exercise. Australian Cattle Dogs are also known as Queensland Heelers and Blue Heelers. These names are an accurate description of how these dogs came into popularity. They originate from Australia and were developed for herding cattle from a mix of Collies and Dingos. They are a stocky, well muscled, and an energetic breed. This breed comes in two colors of blue merle or red speckle. They are highly intelligent, easily trained and eager to please. These dogs require a high level of activity or can get into trouble with bad behaviors if bored. A large backyard is a must. These dogs are known for their loyalty and make excellent guard dogs. They are friendly but generally bond to one person. We do not recommend them around children unless they are raised around children because they have a tendency to nip and try to herd less dominant members of the family. Australian cattle dogs are susceptible to hereditary medical problems such as deafness and hip dysplasia. Be sure to research your breeder carefully. Australian cattle dogs have a short dense coat that is easily groomed and is a light shedder.
