If you are looking for the perfect pet bird, the Cockatiel is it!  These birds have lots of great qualities.   Cockatiels are easily tamed and trained, are fairly inexpensive, they can talk, are not noisy, and come in a variety of beautiful colors.  They are a great beginner bird because of their ease of care and personality.

The most common colors for Cockatiels are grey, cinnamon, lutino, pearl and pied.  However, there are many new mutations on the market which can make the price go from a normal range of $20-$30 to $100.

In the wild, Cockatiels are social creatures and live in large flocks.  This is why they love attention.  This is also why these birds are capable of a strong bond.  If you would like your bird to bond to you, it is recommended that you do not keep two birds in the same cage.   The lifespan of a well taken care of Cockatiel can range from 15 - 25 years making them, in some cases, lifelong family members.

Differentiating between the sexes can be fairly easy because the older males have brightly colored cheek patches on their face, as well as,  solid colored tail feathers (females have stripes) and the male has no spots on the flight feathers.

Cockatiels are considered average talkers.  While not as clear as some of the larger parrots, they are capable of a large vocabulary as well as tunes.
