Owner Review: I have an Umbrella Cockatoo and can't say enough about how loving and smart they are.  If you want a bird that has a strong bond with its owner, wants constant attention and love and can learn to talk, this birds for you!   My Cockatoo, Paco, loves to have his crest preened and to be scratched under his wings.  We have a large cage with an exercise area on top that he loves to play on and screech at the top of his lungs, while flapping his wings as hard as he can.   What a ham!

Species Information

Cockatoos are native to Australia and some islands in the South Pacific.  They are social birds and live in large flocks (families).  They rely heavily on their flock or family members for comfort and security.  Cockatoos come in a variety of species such as the Moluccan (Peach colored), Umbrella (white), Sulphur Crested (white with yellow crest), Goffin, and Bare-Eyed.  Cockatoos are known for their strong bond with their owner and their shrill calls morning and again at night.  They do not make great apartment dwellers because of their loud calls.  These calls are to locate their family members.   Keep in mind that your Cockatoo instinctively will call (loudly) to keep track of you.  Once your Cockatoo has bonded with you, he will want your constant attention.   It is best to be consistent with your play time.  If you give attention erratically, your Cockatoo will always ask for more.   Cockatoos are avid chewers.  Your furniture looks very enticing to a Cockatoo.  Be sure to provide many challenging toys such as ropes, toys with hidden treats, and wood chews.  If you are an allergy sufferer, you may not want to pick a Cockatoo.  These birds are covered in a fine talcum powder to keep their feathers healthy.  When you pick-up a Cockatoo your hands will be covered in the powder.   Lots of powder on the feathers is a sign of good health.  Cockatoos are not known for their great talking abilities, but are able to master a couple of words.  They are best known for their antics of dancing, flapping and fluffing.    We do not recommend these birds for first time bird owners because of the amount of attention they require and noise they make.

Do you have a bird that is like a two year old having a temper tantrum....always biting, doesn't step up, scared, screaming or isn't social?  We have found the Nanny 911 of the bird world.  Check out the website below to find useful information and a DVD on how to develop a great relationship with your bird.
