Black Mouth Cur Pet Rating System: 1= Lowest 5 = Highest
Overall Rating:
Remember Old Yeller the movie with that great dog?...this is the breed! There is not a lot of information about this breed because it's history is not well known. However, this is a true blue American bred dog. The little history that is documented states that this herding breed was developed in the areas of Tennessee and Mississippi and traveled West with the Settlers. The Black Mouth Cur is part of the Herding Group. They are well known for their ability to "tree". They have excellent tracking and retrieving capabilities. The famous color of the Black Mouth Cur is fawn or yellow with a black muzzle, however, it does have other acceptable colors such as; brindle and red. This breed also is a large breed comparable to the Labrador Retriever at about 80 pounds. The Black Mouth Cur is very intelligent, loyal and has a strong personality. Therefore, socialization and obedience training are a must. They are good with children if raised around kids. However, because they can display herding characteristics, we recommend older children. They are very protective of family and can be wary of strangers and unknown dogs. Exercise for this breed is important. At least two walks per day is recommended. If in a small housing environment, they must receive regular exercise. They can quickly become bored and a bored dog is a destructive dog. Using their natural hunting ability; play hide-n-seek games to keep them busy. For more information on this breed check the websites below: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/blackmouthcur.htm
