Lion Fish Pet Rating System: 1= Lowest 5 = Highest
Overall Rating:
Lion Fish We have rated the Lion Fish with a Pet Rating of 2 because of the fact that they are not a beginner saltwater fish. These fish are poisonous and extreme care should be taken when handling these fish. They should only be handled with a net. If stung, seek medical attention immediately. The Lion Fish has other names it is known by such as the Turkey Fish and the Scorpion fish. These fish are extremely popular saltwater aquarium fish because they adapt easily to an aquarium environment and are easy to feed. Lion Fish require live prey to feed upon such as feeder guppies and minnows. This makes for a great show of predator/prey. You can also try feeding bits of shrimp on the end of a toothpick (be sure to keep hands clear of the spines). When keeping Lion Fish, do not keep any fish smaller than the size of the Lion Fish's mouth or it will be eaten. They will also eat crabs and shrimps. Lion Fish may not do well with certain types of Tangs and Surgeons since these fish are aggressive and may get stung by the Lion Fish. You can expect your fish to grow from about 6 inches in some species and can grow as large as 12 inches. These fish have been known to live in captivity for up to 10 years. We recommend at least a 50 gallon aquarium when taking into account their adult size and the room you need to maneuver around them. Lion Fish in the wild are usually found hiding underneath large overhangs of coral waiting for their prey to happen by. Your Lion Fish will be more at home if you supply some large rocks for hiding underneath. Since these fish are found mostly in the Indo-Pacific, their water temperature should be around 78 - 80 degrees. You will be greatly entertained by this beautiful and unique aquarium addition.
