Pet Matcher - Choose By Lifestyle Some animals are better suited to a certain kind of lifestyle. We have tried to compile a list that is thorough, however, please note that each animal (as in people) has their own personality and does not always fit the standard mold for their breed type. Let's explore what type of pet can fit best into your way of life.
Keep in mind that sometimes the best pet can be found at the SHELTER!
DOGS: If you have an active lifestyle, we suggest you pick a medium to large sized breed known for a good temperament and high energy level (some smaller breeds fit this mold also). These types require more exercise and attention and make great jogging companions. CATS: Wondering why we are suggesting cats? Usually cats are aloof and indifferent to what you are doing. However, there are those breeds that are more active than others and require more attention. Generally, you would not be taking your cat out for a jog but you might be lucky and find a cat who follows you around and asks to be the center of attention. BIRDS: Any size bird can fit into an active lifestyle, however, bigger birds usually require more activity and interaction with their owner than smaller birds. FISH: A freshwater or saltwater aquarium can be a "piece of nature" in your home. We recommend any and all types of fish. SMALL ANIMALS: Pocket pets can fit easily into a busy lifestyle because they are easy to care for and actually do fit in your pocket for on-the-go fun.
DOGS: For non-active lifestyles we recommend the small to medium size and toy breeds. A non-active dog is content being inside and would make a great lap dog. CATS: Cats make one of the best pets for a non-active lifestyle because they are (underneath the aloofness) great lapsitters and nappers. Any cat breed would be ideal, however, below is a list of breeds that are known for their "lap appeal". BIRDS: Any size bird can fit into a non-active lifestyle, however, we recommend smaller birds because they are less noisy and when in pairs, require less interaction. SMALL ANIMALS: Pocket pets are a great pet for a non-active lifestyle because they are happy enjoying a life of leisure and can be tamed easily. REPTILES: Some reptiles are a good choice because they are quiet and less demanding, although some species do require live food. FISH: A freshwater or saltwater aquarium can be a "piece of nature" in your home. We recommend any and all types of fish.
Always supervise small children with your pets! DOGS: We recommend that you pick a medium to large sized breed. Kids tend to be a little rough, especially when the child is younger, and the smaller breeds can be overwhelmed and may bite if hurt. Proper training and socialization is also a key ingredient to keeping dogs with children. If you have children under the age of 5, we recommend starting with a puppy so the two can grow to love and respect one another. Keep in mind older dogs are not very tolerant of children. CATS: Most breeds of cats get along well with children. BIRDS: Smaller birds tend to be a better starter pet for children because they do not bite as hard. Try to stay away from too small a bird because little hands can squeeze and injure the bird. SMALL ANIMALS: These are probably the best starter pet because they are easily tamed and cared for. FISH: We recommend any and all types of fish because they can add "a piece of nature" to your home. Of course for children, goldfish are always a good first choice. REPTILES: We do not recommend reptiles for small children because of the risk of contracting salmonella poisoning.
