Our Rating:  Yorkies can be known as an active dog, however, are very happy to be held and cuddled all day.  They do not require long walks to burn off energy.  They have a great temperament that is easy going and loyal.  However, because of their smaller size, they have a tendency to be shy and timid around children and other animals.  We do not recommend this breed for children under the age of 6.  Their small size makes them perfect for any household.

The Yorkshire Terrier also known as the Yorkie is descended from ratting dogs that were developed in Scotland.  The Yorkie is a toy breed weighing in around 8 to 10 pounds.  Their small size does not deter them from thinking they own the world!  They are particularly prized for their silky coat.  These dogs have a giant sized personality for their tiny bodies.  Do not expect a total lap dog.  Their extra long coat requires more than average grooming.  Be prepared to make frequent groomer trips.   Yorkies are also harder than the average dog to house-train.  Although not impossible, they do require a strict schedule and some refresher courses.   Yorkies are good with children temperament wise, however we recommend that the children be older.  Small children can easily hurt a Yorkie because of its small size.   This breed is also considered an allergy-free breed because of its minimal shedding and dander (all dogs shed, some less than others).   Common health problems in Yorkies include; allergies, skin problems and teeth decay.
